July 22 Cyclo Cross-Venue updateOK we are going to move the race venue to the Strathcona Science Park. The park and trails at the Velodrome are just to busy and conflicts with trail users and people using the soccer fields will develop and with cycling in the area under scrutiny due to the building of the new Velodrome we need to keep our presence low key at this point. Thanks to Cory, Trevor, Gary and Jay for helping to check out the area and their input regarding a new venue. We will be meeting at the Science Park on Friday 8 Aug at 7 PM to set up the course. The following Tue. a test run for timing and course monitoring with the race series starting on the 19 Aug. Assistance with the course and races will be needed in order to run a successful series. Proposed race nights(6) are Tuesdays from the 19 Aug to 30 Sept. Thanks Stew July 15 Devon Dust Up Perfect day for a MTB race on a climb heavy course along Devon's River Valley. Great to see Roger back and finishing third in the sport men. It looks like Marc with a first place finish and Adrien in fourth will move up to sport. Great effort this year guys. Gary and Stew rounded out the novice men both finishing the tough course. Tim with this years leader plate finished first in the Elite men with a strong ride and great climbs. Peter and Brenton finished fifth and sixth in the expert men. In the single speed Matt had the second best time but was DQ due to a repair out of the technical area. Matt reported the repair to the commissaries on his last lap as he should have and was allowed to finish. Great racing ability and sortsmanship shown by Matt who will be a force in the upcoming cycle cross season. July 07 Canada Cup Canmore Check the following in Pedal Magazine. Great write up on Tim's Canada Cup victory in Canmore. Copy URL and paste for the web sites for Pedal Magazine and Mical's Blog. http://www.pedalmag.com/index.php?module=Section&action=viewdetail&item_id=13813 We are so fortunate to have Tim under our colors as a racer and even more so for his technical help so freely available to our race team. Thanks Tim On the Alberta front in the woman's category Mical Dyck won the elite woman's race and should be a contender for Canada's national team by virtue of her win's alone and the effort she has put into racing. See her blog. http://www.micaldyck.blogspot.com/ July 03 Canada Crit and team news Once again I was impressed by our elite riders in the Crit. Tim's race strategy is second to none in this province. It was great to see Brys out shaking off the cobwebs and rebuilding his cycling talents after successfully completing his training in the Edmonton Police Service. Their gain is our loss but he will be back for Cycle cross. Matthew Krhan established himself as a racer winning second in the Cat 5. Adrian, James and Marc filled out the Cat 5 slate rideing well. Cat 4 had an awsome finish with Corry finnishing third and Peter finishing fourth in a great sprint that could have see either one finnish higher. Photo Finish great effort guys. Cat 1,2,3 was exciting and Tim's blog has the race details. Strong competiion from Taylor and Mike. Thanks for representing us guys. In the Ladies and Master C you never know. Dispite being down three laps I managed to Get 4 points. My first ever points in any race Road, MTB or Cycle Cross. If there had been a Master D catagory I would have cleaned up. I read Marc Rumsey's article in the ABA Spinner magazine and total agree that we race for the health, comraderie and fun in the sport. I would like to see more Master riders in C,D, and E and encouage active life styles as well as entertainment for spectators. Stew Hutchings July 02 CANADA DAY CRITERIUM- UNITED CYCLE GOES 1- 2From www.bikealberta.com
United Cycle goes 1 - 2 in the Cat 1/2&3 race at the 2008 Canada Day Crit.
Mark Bomhof (United Cycle) took the win with consistent sprinting and teamwork while Tim Heemskerk (United Cycle) was able to clear the green spew from his lungs [collected during this past Sunday's podium effort at the dusty Kamloops Canada Cup MTB Race] to claim 2nd spot in the points race. Please visit Tim's weblog and read a more detailed race report! Points were awarded every 4 laps in increments of 5-3-2-1 for the top four riders with double points on the line for the final sprint.Jeff Barnes was 3rd while Graham Shrive (Pedalhead Road Works) finished 4th. For all other results please click [here] United Boys leading out Marc B for the points. United Boys regrouping during the points race. KAMLOOPS (BC) CANADA CUP #4From www.bikealberta.com
handful of Alberta MTB racers braved the elements and competed in the Kamloops Canada Cup this past Sunday. Racers had to contend with 40+ degree heat and lung burning dust.
Edmonton’s Tim Heemskerk (United Cycle) finished on the podium in 3rd spot today at the 4th stop on the Canada Cup circuit. It was a last minute decision for Heemskerk to attend this race however it turns out that it was worth the 8 hr drive to Kamloops. Justin Middleton (Team Alberta / Juventus) matched Heemskerk’s performance by placing 3rd in the Junior Men’s race as well. The Hardcore duo of Steve Martins & Mike Blennerhasset ripped up the Master 30-39 category by going 1st & 2nd respectively. Ty Andrews (Team Alberta) finished a strong 3rd in a deep U17 category. And rounding out the day of Alberta rider podiums was Kelly Hall (Team Alberta) taking the win in the women’s U17 category. Congratulations to all AB riders who found success on the Canada Cup circuit this past weekend. Full results can be viewed [here] The next stop for the MTB Canada Cup Series is in our backyard - Canmore, AB. See you there! May 31 Grass Roots Update On the 2 of June 2008 I am pleased to let you know that I will be taking a position with the United Cycle sales team and setting up our Grassroots club riding programs. Over the years through my work with the MS society and friendships with team riders and store personal I have developed a great appreciation for the work United Cycle does in giving back to the community. I hope to add to that with my new duties. It will be a big learning curve for me but I know I can rely on you all for knowledge and assistance. I will update the stores Grassroots schedule on Monday. At This point I know on Wednesday(6:30 from the store) Tim will continue to run his skills program which was a great success last Wednesday. The feed back was very positive. Thanks Tim. This Thursday we will run our intermediate to beginner MTB ride and Road Ride starting at 6:30 PM. Once we have our ride leaders in place we will make cycling an enjoyable experience for our club riders and foster advanced involvement for those who aspire to race. I feel there are other community events that we can assist with in a volunteer capacity and I welcome any input, advise and constructive criticisms you may offer. My approach to work and or problems is to find a way to do things not to stonewall, procrastinate and delay doing things we need to do to advance our missions. I am willing to learn in the areas where I lack skill and knowledge and believe in a team approach to get the necessary things done to be successful. I have all ready received some invaluable help from Tim and Brys and look forward to this new part of my life. Thanks in advance. April 17 Lethbridge Update....FROM THE ABA WEBSITE:
2008 Coulee Cruiser Re-Scheduled Moved to April 27
Due poor weather the Coulee Cruiser has been rescheduled to Sunday, April 27, 2008. April 16 Headwinds Coulee Cruiser UpdateI've checked the Headwinds Club site and things are not looking so good. This is what it had to say,
April 14 Bzzzkill Harmonic Dampers By MathewsWith all of the crappy roads out there, get yourself a set of these harmonic dampers. Both Hincapie and O'Grady used them in the Paris-Roubaix over all the cobble. "Using harmonic damper technology borrowed from the bow industry, Bzzzkill inserts are a simple and effective way to cancel high frequency road vibrations. Plugs are easy to install and fit directly into the end of the handlebar. Used by the Astana Pro Cycling Team." ~ http://bontrager.com/model/04579/en
I should have brought a bag of these with me on the ride last Sunday. We found "chip-seal" that was more like a pebble beach.
![]() To Race Or Not To Race.............If your not sure whether or not you should go to the Coulee Cruiser in Lethbridge, think about this. Everyone is thinking the same thing. With the weather being forcasted as if it were mid November there will be a good number of racers staying home. It's time for some easy points! I've heard from Roddi that they have not cancelled this race in the past 11 years. Maybe worst case is we race a dirt crit in the gravel area. Let's go!
